Carpenter Ants & Termites Make a Meal of Your Home

Among the various pests A&M Pest Control encounters, carpenter ants and termites are some of the most common. Both love one thing: wood. And the northeastern United States has plenty of it. Where there aren’t trees growing, there are likely buildings that house businesses and homes. Buildings which are supported primarily by wooden beams.

Carpenter ants and termites are not dangerous on their own. However, their love for the taste of wood, combined with their numbers in colonies, means they have the potential to weaken the structure of a building over time, as well as anything else that’s made out of wood (like furniture). Termites will also damage items made out of paper and cloth, as well as carpet.

There are two signs to look out for if you suspect carpenter ants or termites in your home. The first is wood damage. Wood will have holes and runs chewed in it, sometimes over quite a large area. The second is wood shavings. As carpenter ants burrow in wood, they push aside shavings. These can eventually be pushed out of the wood altogether, collecting in a pile on the nearest horizontal surface.
