Nobody wants pests in their home but learning what attracts the pests in the first place is vital to keeping them at bay. While prevention doesn’t ensure you’ll never have a pest in your home, it greatly reduces the chances and frequency. Take a look at these common mistakes that could be making your home attractive to pets.

Food

Spilled food and food left out is one of the most common causes of pesky pests. To prevent pests in your home due to food, be sure you don’t leave any food containers or items out and exposed. Cleaning up any spilled food and crumbs each day is an easy habit to form that will deter the pests even more. Many homeowners fail to move the fridge and stove to clean the food from behind them, leaving the perfect breeding ground for pests.

Indoor Temperatures

Cold weather leaves pests searching for heat to survive. Many of those pests find the warmth they need inside of the homes of unsuspecting owners. While you can’t change the outdoor temperatures or keep your home cold, you can be vigilant to look for signs of rodents as the temperatures outside begin to drop.

Trash

Garbage cans are a stereotypical lure for pests, but that stereotype holds true. Both indoor and outdoor trashcans should regularly be emptied and cleaned to prevent pests using them to feed. Your indoor trash can should be emptied each time it smells or contains foods that will lure pests quickly, such as fresh fruit and vegetable scraps.

Dormant Drains

An unused drain creates the perfect moist and warm environment for a pest to live and breed in. Unused drains in your home found in guest bathrooms or laundry room sinks should be rinsed regularly with hot water to prevent pests. If you continue to notice the unwanted guests around your drains, a snake or drain treatment may be needed to break up a clog.

Dirty Dishes

Unwashed dishes offer the perfect combination of moisture and food to hungry pests. To avoid dishes luring pests into your home, you should clean your dishes each day on a regular schedule. If the dishes will be sitting in your sink for a few hours before they’re washed, be sure to rinse the food particles off of them with hot water. After cleaning the dirty dishes out of your sink you should clean the sink itself to rid the space of any remaining materials that could attract pests.
