Most Common Hiding Spots for Rodents

While it is not always easy to know if you have a rodent problem in your home, however, the mouse poop on your counter and your shredded rice bags are probably a good indicator. But, you don’t know where these little critters are hiding. Figuring out where rodents are in your building is essential for proper rodent control. To help you locate these pesky creatures, check out these five common hiding spots for rodents.

Kitchens

As you likely know, rodents love an easy meal. Whether they eat up crumbs you’ve left behind from last night’s dinner or have to chew through a plastic bag to get to your cereal, human food beats searching for a meal in the outdoors. With lots of cabinets and dark corners, kitchens also provide excellent hiding spots for rodents.

When it comes time to search for rodents in your kitchen, you’ll need to look in all your cupboards and drawers. If you find an area that has more than a few rodent droppings, it’s likely the rodents are hiding out in this location.

Another kitchen area where rodents like to hide is behind appliances. While it may seem like a lot of work, pull out your refrigerator and oven to check for rodent nests.

Basements

If you have a basement, especially an unfinished basement, there’s a good chance rodents may be hiding there. While humans may not like the dark and cluttered sections of a basement, rodents love these places.

When you’re searching your basement for signs of rats and mice, make sure to take a close look at areas you hardly touch. That means examining that pile of cardboard boxes and taking a look through the area where you keep your storage containers.

Attics

Since humans rarely enter attics, they are a safe space for rodents to hide. Additionally, attics often have areas that are not completely sealed from the outdoors. Squirrels, rats, and other rodents can enter under eaves or in holes in your roof.

Attics also tend to be warm in the winter as heat rises from the rest of your house. This makes an attic a cozy spot for rodents to hide.

Closets

Closets are another dark and cozy spot where rodents love to hide. Closest that don’t experience much traffic, like linen closets, are especially great homes for rodents.

Spaces in Between Walls

If you’ve ever heard rodents scampering in your walls, you know they can easily get inside. While it’s out of the question for humans to crawl between joists and studs, it’s an easy feat for mice and rats.

Rodents can enter walls through tiny holes and gaps between the drywall and baseboard. Once they enter into a wall, they can easily travel throughout your house while being safe from humans and pets. Another benefit of hiding between walls is insulation. This material not only keeps your house cozy, but it also provides a comfortable home for rodents.
