An infestation of pests can prove to be one of the most challenging experiences of a homeowner’s life. And if those pests happen to be rodents, well, that’s a pretty severe problem. Unfortunately, with the cold weather coming on, rodents like rats and mice are looking for a warm, dry place to call home. We’ve gathered a few tips to help you keep rodents out of your home this fall.
Don’t give them a home
Rodents that are tempted to come into your house probably already live near your house. To prevent rats, mice, and other rodents from entering your home, remove their outdoor habitat first. Piles of organic matter, like leaves and branches, are popular homes for rodents. Old cars, appliances, and other hiding places are also favorites. Do your home a favor and remove these items now, so rodents will have to go further afield to find shelter.
Don’t give them food
You’re probably not actively feeding uninvited rodent guests, but you could be doing so unintentionally. If you keep trash cans outside, make sure they are covered and hard to open. Make sure to keep all food items in the kitchen and pantry in hard-to-open containers. Mice and rats will gnaw through packaging to get what’s inside. If you have pets, make sure to keep pet food in a quality container to prevent contamination. And if you have a garden, keep an eye on your fruits and veggies – harvest them as soon as they’re ready so the rodents can’t get to them first.
Prevent entry
If there are lots of wild mice around your home and you’ve taken care to make them feel unwelcome, you should also ensure that there’s no way for them to enter the house. Check the outside of your home for any cracks or holes that could let rodents inside. Once you identify these problem areas, fill them up with steel wool, cement, plaster, or caulking, depending on the gap’s location and requirements.
Ask around
If you live in a suburban neighborhood and have a problem with rodents, it’s likely that your neighbors are too, especially if the houses are close together. Ask around to see if anyone else has the same problem; if so, you can work together to get rid of the pest or possibly call for help from local animal control.
