How to Keep Pests Out of a Small Apartment

Home » FAQ » How to Keep Pests Out of a Small Apartment

Bugs, mice, and various rodents are visitors no one wants in their homes. Pests can feel like dirty roommates when you live in a small apartment. Keeping your apartment pest-free can require a few tricks, and they aren’t just about keeping your place clean – although that’s part of the process.

Clean it All

While it might be old news, it is still important to consider – pests like garbage, crumbs, and cluttered spaces. Take out your trash regularly, wipe down the counters daily, and don’t leave dishes in the sink. It’s also a good idea to vacuum, mop, and dust regularly.

Ensuring that the outside of your home is clean is also essential. You might attract rodents and insects if you have a porch area cluttered with junk. If your grass is tall and unkempt, critters may find a home there and extend it to your apartment. Clean up the outside as much as the inside!

Seal Every Entrance, Exit, Nook, and Cranny

Of course, open doors and windows will invite little critters in. Unfortunately, pests don’t only enter through the apparent spaces. If there are any cracks or gaps in the wall, problems will go through. When the pipes extending from the walls are not adequately sealed, critters can also gain entrance there. Be sure to seal every possible entryway to prevent pests completely.

Make Sure It’s Dry

Bugs are especially drawn to wet environments. Leaks under the sink, humidity lingering in the bathroom, and puddles in the basement can create ideal spaces for bugs to loiter. Ensure you keep the moisture from your home, and you’ll be less likely to have unwanted critters.

Peppermint Oil is a Deterrent

You might be surprised – or skeptical – that essential oil is often an excellent deterrent for pests. A mixture of peppermint oil and water sprayed throughout your home can be a fantastic way to safely keep bugs and other problems out of your apartment. It only takes 15 drops of peppermint oil to a cup of water.

To prevent entry through your doors, fill a spray bottle with the mixture and apply it to the floor around the entrances. You can also use it on your kitchen counters, in the bathroom, and other locations. Reapply weekly for the best results.
