You’ve likely never heard of musophobia, most people haven’t, but it could be something that affects you every day. Before you can diagnose whether or not you’re suffering from musophobia, it’s important to understand what it is.

What is Musophobia?

Musophobia is an extremely common type of specified phobia. This phobia is the fear of mice or rats. The name simply explains this when broken down into two parts. Phobia, meaning fear and muso, meaning mice. Many people suffering from musophobia have had a traumatic experience with mice or rats that results in heightened anxiety, fear, and dread surrounding the rodents.

What to Know About Mice and Rodents

Mice and rodents are obviously intimidating to those suffering from musophobia, but knowledge is power! These are a few quick facts that you need to know about mice and rodents.

  • They can spread disease – certain breeds of mice and other rodents are prone to carrying diseases. You have to have a major infestation to be at risk for catching a disease though. One mouse or rodent won’t cause a risk to your health.
  • They grow in numbers – typically if you see signs of one mouse or rodent you surely have more. The quicker you can exterminate the problem the easier it will be as their population will be lower.
  • They leave a trace – the first obvious sign of mice and rodents are droppings seen around the home. If you have musophobia, try to be realistic and not become afraid or anxious until you’ve seen this obvious sign of an unwanted presence.

Overcoming Your Fear

Many people turn to anti-anxiety medication to overcome their fear or make it more manageable. To help overcome your fear in the long term, hypnotherapy and counseling are popular choices. Overcoming your fear is possible but reaching out for help is the first step. It’s important to remember that this is a common phobia and medical professionals won’t judge you for seeking out help!

Getting Rid of Rodents and Mice

An obvious solution to the symptoms associated with musophobia is clearing your home of any possible rodents and mice. If you’ve seen droppings or other signs of the unwanted guests in your home, contacting an exterminator is the next step to take. Home methods of mice and rodent removal tend to be ineffective and they’re unrealistic for someone suffering from musophobia. While you overcome your fear and anxiety, regular inspections from an exterminator to ensure no mice or rodents are present is a great option to invest in.
