Earwig

If you recently have seen an insect with a long skinny body with long antennae that come from the head with pincers at the end of the abdomen, it might be an earwig. Because of its appearance, it can scare many people and there are some myths people fear about earwigs which are not true.

Earwigs are common insects in the United States introduced from Europe in the early 20th century. There is a myth that earwigs can burrow into a brain through the ears and will lay eggs inside, hence the name. Although it is true that earwigs love a warm and humid hiding area, yet, they are highly unlikely to crawl into ears. An insect is unlikely to be strong enough to get past the thick bone in your ear and each the brain.

As the weather becomes warm, earwigs are more likely to move into indoors because, in your home, they can find food, warmth, and shelter. It is also nearly impossible to keep them out because they can crawl into homes through very small cracks. However,  earwigs do prefer the outdoors when it is wet with moisture coming from mulch, decaying leaves, and rotting logs and stumps. Only when the weather gets dry, they are likely to be found in bathrooms, basements, and kitchens.
